Cold Upstairs Bedrooms in Richmond Hill? How to Warm Them Without Overworking Your Furnace

drywall

It’s one of the most common winter complaints we hear in Richmond Hill: the main floor is comfortable, but the bedrooms upstairs are cold, and the room over the garage is worse. So the thermostat goes up, the furnace runs longer, and the main floor gets too warm while the upstairs still lags behind.

Turning up the heat doesn’t solve an uneven house. Fixing where the heat escapes does. Here’s how to warm up the cold spots without overworking your furnace.

Why Upstairs Rooms Get So Cold

Large two-storey homes are common across Richmond Hill, from Oak Ridges to Bayview Hill. The upper floor sits directly under the attic, so if the attic is under-insulated, those rooms lose heat through the ceiling all day. Rooms with exterior walls on three sides, or with a cold garage underneath, lose heat in more directions.

The thermostat is usually on the main floor, so it’s satisfied long before the bedrooms are. The result is a furnace that runs long and a house that’s still uncomfortable.

Fix #1: Bring Your Attic Up to R-50

The ceiling over your second floor is the largest single surface between your heated space and the outdoors. Attic insulation in Richmond Hill is usually the most effective way to even out temperatures between floors and shorten furnace cycles.

Ontario’s attic rebate program uses R-50 as its target. That’s about 13 to 15 inches of blown-in cellulose, or 17 to 19 inches of blown-in fibreglass. If your attic looks shallow or uneven, or the insulation has been crushed by storage or foot traffic, a top-up will help.

Two details matter: baffles keep soffit vents open so the attic stays dry, and any wet or contaminated insulation should go through attic insulation removal before new material goes in.

Fix #2: Insulate the Garage Ceiling

A bedroom or bonus room over an attached garage is cold from the floor up. Even with a well-insulated attic, the floor stays cold if the garage ceiling below has gaps or thin insulation. Garage ceiling insulation, often with 2 lb closed-cell spray foam, insulates and air-seals the floor so the room above can finally hold heat.

Fix #3: Seal Air Leaks on the Top Floor

Pot lights, bathroom fans and attic hatches in upstairs hallways are common leak points. Warm air escapes through them into the attic, and cold air gets pulled in lower down to replace it. Sealing those gaps helps both floors. For a whole-house solution, AeroBarrier air sealing seals leaks you can’t reach by hand.

Fix #4: Balance the Airflow You Already Have

  • Don’t close the registers on the main floor to push heat upstairs. It can increase duct pressure and strain the blower.
  • Keep upstairs return grilles clear so warm air can circulate properly.
  • Ask your HVAC technician about balancing the dampers in your ductwork during your annual service.
  • Run the furnace fan on low or circulate to mix air between floors, if your system supports it.

Fix #5: Use a Smart Thermostat With a Remote Sensor

Some smart thermostats can use room sensors to average temperatures between floors, so the system isn’t only responding to the main floor. The Home Renovation Savings program offers a rebate on eligible smart thermostats.

Attic Rebate Details

Through the Home Renovation Savings program, Richmond Hill homeowners can receive up to $1,250 for bringing an attic up to R-50, with no energy assessment needed. Attics starting between R-12 and R-25 qualify for up to $1,000, and between R-25 and R-35, up to $800. The attic-only rebate must be done by a participating contractor, and gas-heated homes must be Enbridge Gas customers. The program is extended to November 30, 2026, but terms can change. Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my upstairs colder than my main floor in winter?

Upstairs rooms sit under the attic and often have more exterior exposure. If the attic is under-insulated or leaky, heat escapes through the ceiling faster than the furnace can replace it on that floor.

Will attic insulation fix a cold room over the garage?

It helps, but a room over a garage usually needs the garage ceiling insulated too, since the floor is losing heat into the garage.

Can I stay home during installation?

Yes. You don’t need to leave your home while attic or garage ceiling insulation is installed.
